This build was my first true go at building and configuring a pro-sumer home server and I want to share it. The whole point of the server is to centralize all my data in a safe storage place without using cloud services, run my home automations, be an NVR for my security system, games server and eventually stop my Netflix subscription. The specifications of the sever are a bit over kill if you are just wanting a network attached storage (NAS) system. Currently, I have this running TrueNAS Scale to handle all my NAS needs with the following applications to provide other features through the Application containers and virtual machines.

Applications:

  • Wireguard, to enable remote connect to the server away from home. This is for streaming when I am travelling

  • Home Assistant, on a virtual machine for my home automation and NVR needs.

  • JellyFin, to replace Netflix; but you can use Plex. However Plex is now about $400 for a lifetime memebership.

  • Automation Ripping Machine, to rip media from CDs and DVD.

  • Syncthing, to synchronize data between my workstation and the server.

I can hear everyone saying the p word; and yes you can set up a torrent client and use the Arr programs (prowlarr, sonarr, lidarr and radarr) to create an automated system to find and download our favorite TV shows and movies. If you want to do this I highly suggest that you use a VPN, to protect yourself.

Currently I don’t think I would create a how to guide, as my favorite you tube channels like Level One, Craft Computing, LTT and Hardware Heaven have really good tutorials.
